Kids Vegan Cookbook - Curly Sue

Susanne Cirlew, aka Kirly-Sue is an Islington-based vegan cook, blogger and TV presenter who has released a plant-based book titled ‘Cooking With Kids’ featuring 'recipes for vegans, vegetarians, flexitarians and those meat eaters who would like to try something new'.

Kirly-Sue was a vegetarian for 20 plus years and was also a dairy avoider, before she became vegan almost seven years ago, mainly as a dietary preference.

The book contains easy-to-follow vegan recipes you can make for children and they can cook with you too. Vegan cooking for children is easier than you think, in the book you will find simple recipes, using ingredients that are hopefully in your kitchen cupboard already.

Being challenged with cooking vegan food for children can seem a daunting task. Fear not! For this fabulous new cookbook makes it all the more easy! Not only is the book packed full of 75 recipes but each one is easy to follow, and allows the budding little cooks in your family to give it a go.

We put that to the real test and I somehow managed to persuade my 18 month old that she wanted to do the cooking. I mean, cooking is a loose term for what she actually managed to do. Eating was the order of the day, and every single ingredient was tried and tested by my little helper as it went into the bowl.

We made the Banana Cake – given the Lockdown, I was amazed that I had every ingredient in the cupboard. It was super easy to make and utterly delicious to eat (and this is coming from someone who adores her dairy!) What was equally brilliant, is that said 18 month old really enjoyed it. Although with not a word in her vocabulary, she managed to listen to me and follow the instructions, as I said, mash, stir and a lot of don’t eat it all! Give it a go and let us know how you get on.

Banana Cake 


Bananas – 1lb (450g) ripe, mashed

Light Flavourless oil – 4 oz (100ml) – for example sunflower

Raisins – 4 oz (100g)

Rolled Oats – 3 oz (75g)

Wholewheat or spelt flour 5 oz (150g)

Cinnamon -1/4 tsp

Nutmeg – ¼ tsp

Pinch of Salt



  1. Preheat the oven to 190 C (375 F, Gas Mark 5)
  2. Mix together all ingredients until combined
  3. Pour mixture into a medium-sized cake tin, greased and lined with greaseproof paper
  4. Bake for 55 minutes, or until a toothpick placed in the middle comes out clean (I ended up cooking mine for about 40 mins, so do check as every oven is different!)
  5. Allow to cool and then serve
